This is one of many short video segments which will be added to the Digital Tipping Point (DTP) archive. This particular segment features Sam Hiser, who is a former Global Marketing Lead for the OpenOffice.org office productivity suite that is competing with Microsoft Office. This interview takes place at the end of the day at Linux World Expo SF 2005, and Sam was JUST BEAT dead tired. As a result, at the beginning of the interview, Sam makes a few gaffs that will be wonderful out-takes. Sam is normally razor sharp, and so to see him make a gaff is both a rare treat and unexpected.
Sam them goes on to talk about why he became involved with the OpenOffice.org (OOo) project. He thought that it was important for the world to have a robust office productivity suite that would be independent of any single vendor. If you are dependent on a single vendor's file formats, Sam says, you will be stuck on their upgrade cycles. This freedom is particularly important for small businesses, schools, and governments, says Sam. Sam tells us the difference between OOo and Star Office (SO), which is Sun Microsystems' paid office productivity suite. Same notes that both suites work on Linux, the Mac, Windows, FreeBSD, and Solaris.
This snip ends with Sam in mid-sentence, but that's okay, because you can pick up the rest of his sentence at the next tape.
